The Joke....
Two pieces of string walk into a bar and the bartender looks at them suspiciously. He says "Sorry, we don't serve string here." So dejected the pieces of string walk out. They're sitting in the gutter outside and feeling really thirsty when one piece of string says "Hey! I've got an idea to get me into the bar." So he starts twisting and turning, wriggling this way and that, pulling out a few threads here and there.
Then the piece of string walks back into the bar. The bartender looks at him a little suspiciously again and says "Hey, aren't you that string that came in here before?" The piece of string replies "No, I'm a frayed knot.

This exhibition was born out of an appreciation for artists who work with fiber materials and deal with mixed media in new and innovative ways. The title, I’m a Frayed Knot, is derived from the punch line of a joke. The joke is about a string that reinvents itself by tying himself into a knot and unraveling one end of himself in an attempt to look like a human being—when asked if he is a string he replies, “I’m a Frayed Knot “

This exhibition is about reinvention and pushing the limits of what is possible with media such as sting. Using knitting, beading, embroidering, quilting, sculpting and painting etc, these artists blend traditional and otherwise common materials into distinctly unique objects. A major thread that ties this entire exhibition together is the fact that all of these artworks take an immense amount of time and energy to create. All of these artists are pushing the intended or physical limits of their chosen materials, and they are using these materials to communicate compelling, often personal, narratives.

I asked a question to several individuals involved in collecting art, creating art exhibitions or educating the public about art: “What artists have lingered in your mind long after you experienced their work.” Over a few months the artists in this exhibition emerged from the conversation. Of course we could have gone on and on with this exercise.

“Things that keep me up at night,” represent artists that have dug under our skin, inspired us, haunted us and engaged us. The exhibition is charged with images and messages that will challenge the viewer and, hopefully create a dialogue about many topics and lingering in the mind long after they have been seen.

As part of the exhibition we are requesting students, artists and other community members to submit artists names, specific artworks, written works, films or poetry that have lingered in their minds long after they experienced the work. We will be posting submitted comments and the reason for their selection on the OCC Arts Pavilion Blog and linking referenced websites to our webpage. 5-Year-Old Artists Speak “Language of Paint”
Public Invited to Single-Day Exhibit at OCC

August 16th 3-6:30 pm.

What happens when you give pre-kindergarten children disposable cameras and let them explore their environment? Then ask them to select their favorite photo and recreate the image with paint, even mixing the colors themselves?

The result is a collection of 24 colorful paintings created by five-year-olds from Orange Coast College’s Harry and Grace Steele Children’s Center. “The Language of Paint” will be on display for one day only on Tuesday, August 16th, in the Project Room Gallery of the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. A reception is also planned from 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. The public is invited and admission is free.

“I love art, but I’ve never seen this before,” said Debra Womack, child development specialist who leads the pre-kindergarten class with child care assistants Cendy Guadarrama and Angela Romaro. Everyone has been amazed by the quality of the artwork.

No special art training was provided, but the young artists had a variety of art supplies and tools at their disposal. They also had lots of help from classmates, who would share recently discovered techniques, such as using a sponge or a Q-tip to apply the paint.

The children are “recreating their experience through paint,” Womack explained. They have “a real connection to the artwork. It’s a story of what they love.”

One boy decided to paint a soccer field. He told his teacher that he selected the image “because I have been on a soccer team before.” Many of the paintings focus on flowers and plants found in the Child Care Center’s expansive garden.

The art exhibit will be one of the final events for the pre-kindergarten class, which celebrates graduation on Friday, August 19th. Many of the youngsters have attended the OCC Children’s Center since they began preschool three or four years ago.

The class is planning Literacy Night on Thursday, August 18th, followed by a family campout, complete with tents, a cookout, smores and a movie. A disc jockey will provide entertainment.

The OCC Children’s Center serves 178 children from six-month-old infants to 5-year-olds; it began as a pilot program 40 years ago with 15 children. In 1997 the center moved into its current 14,000-square-foot facility. Although the center’s primary mission is to serve student parents, it also has openings for youngsters from the community. Renowned fashion photographer Melvin Sokolsky will speak at Orange Coast College on Saturday, April 16th, at 2:30 p.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre. The presentation will be followed by a reception and exhibition on campus in the Frank M. Doyle Art Pavilion from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. This is the first annual lecture and exhibition series in Orange County as part of the Month of Photography Los Angeles (MOPLA)

The public is invited to attend the lecture, reception and exhibition. Admission is free. John Upton, OCC photography professor emeritus, will introduce Sokolsky, who received the prestigious Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Photography in 2003. Each year the Lucie Awards, a nonprofit charitable foundation, honors the achievements of the world’s finest photographers. Canon USA named Sokolsky as one of their “Explorers of Light,” to lecture and photograph internationally. The Fahey Klein Gallery in Los Angeles and the Staley/Wise Gallery in New York City represent Mr. Sokolsky.

Sokolsky joined the staff of Harper's Bazaar when he was 21 and has been a major contributor to Esquire, McCall's, Vogue, Newsweek and Show. His photographs of internationally famous personalities have appeared in many of the major museums and magazines worldwide.

The recent hardcover publication Melvin Sokolsky - Archive (Limited Edition (Without Print) will be available to purchase through the Frank M. Doyle Art Pavilion and half of the proceed of all sales will go towards support this and other exhibitions. Archive is a luxuriously bound boxed set, embossed clamshell and cover, in an edition of 1,000 copies, each signed and numbered by Melvin Sokolsky. 472 exquisitely printed pages on archival-quality paper, 15.25 x 12.75 inches. Within the two editions there are 1,000 copies. 700 limited edition copies sell without a print. The Great Picture is a history-making gelatin silver photograph three stories high by eleven stories wide. The image was made using a shuttered Southern California F-18 jet hanger transformed into an enormous camera obscura -- the largest camera ever made. The Great Picture Project artists are Jerry Burchfield, Mark Chamberlain, Jacques Garnier, Rob Johnson, Douglas McCulloh, and Clayton Spada -- The Legacy Project.

This remarkable photograph is a marker of the border crossing as we move out of 170 years of film and into the era of digital dominance. The Great Picture was made using the oldest of image technologies -- a camera obscura. But within minutes of completion, the image leaped into pixel form and traveled around the globe. The Great Picture has been featured in hundreds of publications from art journals such as Art in America, Photographie, AfterImage, and Black & White Magazine to newpapers and periodicals such as the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Der Spiegel, and The Guardian. A major book is forthcoming.The Central Academy of Fine Arts is one of the China's leading art institutions and is housed in a new building designed by Arata Isozaki, an internationally known Japanese architect.

We are honored to announce the Arts Pavilion will be featuring the brush paintings of Ning Yeh in the Project Room.

Opening Reception: February 11th, 6-10 p.m.

We will be opening the exhibit on February 9th though March 23rd, 2011

Ning Yeh was born in China into a family with a renowned artistic tradition for generations. His father, an army general, was renowned for horse painting. He was given the name Ning, meaning tranquility, to celebrate the end of the Second World War. Ning Yeh's art training started when he was seven, after the family moved to Taiwan in 1949. His daily practice included the Four Gentlemen (plum, orchid, bamboo and mum) and calligraphy. At the age of fifteen, the focus of his training turned to horse painting, his family tradition. He proceeded with floral and landscape paintings and gradually developed his own style. Ning was a good student in high school; he became the university draft choice in 1964 and enrolled in the school of diplomacy.

In 1969, the State Department invited the young artist to come to California for an exhibition tour. Ning Yeh accepted scholarships and subsequently received his Ph.D. degree in Asian Studies and Government at Claremont Graduate School.

Dr. Yeh began teaching both Social Sciences and Brush Painting in 1972. Nixon’s visit to China prompted Dr. Yeh to make the decision to focus on his art and left his aspirations of being a diplomat behind. He became a full-time art professor and in Orange County, California, he developed one of the most extensive Chinese Brush Painting programs in the United States. He was three times the recipient of the National Teaching Excellence Award, among many other teaching honors. He started the American Artists of Chinese Brush Painting (AACBP), which grew to 500 members strong and began to lead tours of American Artists to Taiwan and continued to China as China began opening to the West. His extensive travel through all parts of China made him an adviser to China Tourism Office.

In 1978, Dr. Yeh published his first book, "The Art of Chinese Brush Painting." In 1987, Dr. Yeh starred in Coastline College's first instructional television series Chinese Brush Painting with Ning Yeh. The series won the Emmy award for Best Instructional Series and was aired nationally on the Learning Channel. He also authored two additional books, "Chinese Brush Painting: An Instructional Guide" and an album entitled, "Eighty Paintings and Ideas." 1991 saw the release of Dr. Yeh's fourth book, "A.B.C. of Chinese Painting." His instructional books are the best sellers with repeated editions.

He also embarked on the ambitious project to produce instructional TV series on his own. In 1997, Chinese Flower Painting with Ning Yeh was released for a run on the PBS station KOCE. True to his original intent, Dr. Yeh did everything himself, filming, editing, starring, and directing the series.

In 1996, Weyerhaeuser, one of the largest forest products companies, approached Dr. Yeh to be the featured artist for an international ad campaign. Over the next decade, Dr. Yeh and his artwork have been featured prominently in national television commercials as well as ads in the Wall Street Journal, Time, Newsweek and many other national publications. In 2005, Weyerhaeuser invited Dr. Yeh to fly over Mt. St. Helen and commissioned him to do a painting to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the once dormant volcano's eruption. In a dynamic landscape piece, Dr. Yeh paid tribute to the work that Weyerhaeuser has done in replanting the forests originally destroyed by the eruption.

In the late 90s, Dr. Yeh continued his prolific filmmaking as he released Chinese Flower Painting 2. His skill as an artist, filmmaker, and instructor continue to develop and manifest themselves in his best received series ever.

In the new millennium, Dr. Yeh releases his fourth television series entitled Chinese Animal Painting.

Taking pause to look back on Dr. Yeh's career and body of work, it is apparent that he did not abandon his aspirations of being a diplomat. Rather Dr. Yeh has used his artwork as a bridge to encourage mutual appreciation and exchange between the East and the West. This blending of cultures and understandings can be seen in his career and his artwork. He is a cultural ambassador between the East and the West.

Dr. Yeh continues his work deepening and broadening his role as an artist, teacher, author, filmmaker, traveler and cultural ambassador. He lives and maintains his studio in Huntington Beach, California. He is a loving husband to his wife and business partner of nearly 40 years Ling Chi and is a dedicated father to his two children Evan and Ja-Shin.

This exhibition has gathered 110 works from six photographers of Lishui City in China’s Zhejiang Province. They are divided into six parts: portraits, villages, various types of jobs, living, covered bridges, usage of tools, and they are based on the subject of “Land – Era – People”. As a whole, they structurally describe a rich vision of human ecology in the mountain region of southwestern Zhejiang Province. “Land” is a regional concept of space, it is a metaphor for the contents of this exhibition, which are within the Lishui geographical area; “Era” is a historic concept of time, it is a metaphor for the form of humanity style of this place that has a historical extended change; “People” indicates all the ethnic groups who live there. It is their existence and continuation of generations that forms the unique geographical ecology and the one and only cultural landscape in this region.

These six photographers are all local photographers from Lishui City, so they have personal experience as well as an extensive and profound understanding for their own natural landscape, historical evolution and human culture. This has made their image performance full of subtle detail and depth, and at the same time, it lends the work an intoxicating sensation that one is loathe to leave behind. With China’s large-scale expansion and the rapid advance of urbanization, these poetic and pastoral mountain scenes and cultural landscapes, as well as those of life’s productivity, full of deep and warm memory, are now rapidly vanishing. Therefore, these six photographers, as ordinary citizens, from a common point of view, express their frustration and disillusionment in the face of this sudden new reality. When these landscapes and this vibrant and vivid group of people have become only a memory, perhaps only these images, at some unknown moment in the future, will be able to evoke our shared cultural past.

"Status Factory: The Art of Ron English" at Orange Coast College showcases the work of the culture-jammer extraordinaire

When culture-jammer and street artist Ron English climbed up a ladder to a billboard and re-worked it so that a toe-tagged corpse lay next to the corporate logo of Kool cigarettes, he secured my admiration. When I saw his billboard of Picasso’s Guernica with a bright-orange NEW WORLD ORDER plastered over it, I felt like I’d found a long-lost brother. When I watched documentary footage of him liberating a billboard and pasting the message “Let’s Get Drunk and Kill God”—while hostile Christians threatened to kick his ass—I wished I were him.

Curator Andrea Harris-McGee has that documentary (or at least scenes from it), playing on a video loop at Orange Coast College’s Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion in an exhibition of the master’s work, called “Status Factory: The Art of Ron English.” Currently available for streaming on Netflix, the documentary, POPaganda: The Art and Crimes of Ron English is a great introduction to the artist and his methods.

Not that you won’t “get” English immediately upon entering the OCC space. His progressive politics and jeering distain for most things corporate is writ large in nearly every piece he does, whether it’s a sculpture, a painting or his new series of collectors’ toys displayed at the recent Comic-Con. But the film preps you a little for the inevitable shock of walking into the gallery and seeing your cherished childhood memories (Charlie Brown, comic books, Mickey Mouse, KISS and a host of animated commercial pitchmen) trashed.

His particular skill is for cutting, spindling and mutilating pop-culture images, calling them on their bullshit by re-imagining the imagery and then introducing his version (as opposed to the Big Business-approved version). Status Factory is more than just a pun on satisfactory; its jaundiced view of American consumer culture is a colorful, wickedly juicy gob in the face of Madison Avenue. That’s not to say it’s all about anarchy, though. There’s a deep strain of anguish on display here: English may be laughing and shaking his head at what he sees around him, but even a cursory look at the work reveals it to also be a brokenhearted, hysterically open-mouthed cry of pain.

As example, let’s look at just one of his themes—how we prep children for future exploitation—through several works that have nothing to do with each other on the surface, but provide an alternative narrative when looked at together. The empty-headed appeal of the children’s show TheTeletubbies is the starting point for Telegrinnies, its primary-color foursome smiling, the rictus pulling back to reveal a naked skull underneath, a sacred heart and ribcage replacing the usual television screens. Casper the Friendly Ghost makes an appearance in the painting The Resuscitation of Immortality, a repeated image floating through the mind of its heavy-lidded Frankenstein’s monster, surrounded by a graveyard of recycled nostalgia: cartoon characters with skulls for faces, green army men, women recoiling in horror, more comic strips and the most famous zombie of all time, Jesus Christ, thrown in for good measure.

Now that we’ve given our children false hope and a sense of immortality, let’s make them violent: The green toddler Hulk in English’s painting American Infantile pouts and grimaces in steroidal rage, as it stands in front of an American flag, the stars and stripes built of seemingly innocent children’s comic-book panels interspersed with explosive war comic imagery. Further that by giving them war toys and costumes (Camo Clownboy, et al.), as child-sized mannequins in Emmett Kelly make-up hold gaily colored rifles, dressed in DayGlo camouflage. A full wall is devoted to a massive, chilling canvas of kids re-enacting Picasso’s famous anti-war painting mentioned above (a trope throughout the exhibition) and, finally, perhaps most poignantly, life-size skeletal versions of green army men (Dead Soldiers) lying on the battlefield of a rainbow flag (The Color of Change), a single soldier still retaining his skin (Dead Soldier Standing), screaming in terror.

I’m not going to detail the work any further, because, frankly, it’ll just ruin the joy of discovering its humor and depth all by yourself. With the promise of more than 100 pieces on display, I hope those tasty tidbits will make you hungry for more.
In fact, if you’ve never heard of English, I’ll admit to being a little jealous. While he may now have his own line of toys, paint rock & roll album covers for Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, and get displayed in major museums, I’ll never forget the excitement I had when I first saw images of his billboards. I felt thrilled that someone was saying what I felt. That he did it in a way that made me laugh my ass off. That he was giving hell to “The Man.” That the work was public work and money clearly wasn’t the motivating factor. That he got arrested for his art. Remembering that excitement, I’m anxious to hear what you think. You have such an adventure awaiting you.

The Orange Coast College Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion in collaboration with Opera Gallery and Hurley presents Status Factory, a surreal assemblage of over 100 artworks by Ron English. This highly interactive exhibition traces the arc of English's most ambitious themes across mediums.

One of the most prolific and recognizable artists alive today, Ron English has bombed the global landscape with unforgettable images, on the street, in museums, in movies, books, television, and album covers. English coined the term POPaganda to describe his signature mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones, from superhero mythology to totems of art history, populated with his vast and constantly growing arsenal of original characters. Ron English’s art, whether in paintings, billboards, murals, or sculpture, blends stunning visuals with the bitingly humorous undertones of America’s Premier Pop Iconoclast.

Born in Dallas, Texas in 1966, Ron English paints, infiltrates, reinvents and satirizes modern culture and its mainstream visual iconography on canvas, in song, and directly onto hundreds of pirated billboards. English exists spiritually somewhere between a cartoon Abbie Hoffman and a grown-up, real-life Bart Simpson, delivering a steady stream of customized imagery laden with strong sociopolitical undertones, adolescent boy humor, subversive media savvy, and Dali-meets-Disney technique. Dedicated to finding the sublime in the everyday and breaking the momentum of the didactic approach to art and life, English offers up an alternative universe where nothing is sacred, everything is subverted, and there is always room for a little good-natured fun.

After receiving his BA in Piano Performance at Skidmore College, he studied sculpture at California State University Long Beach earning his MFA in 2003. He has shown his work extensively in the Los Angeles Area with solo shows at Raid Projects and Cypress College. His work was recently on view at The Attic Gallery, and Laguna Art Museum. His diverse studio practice includes sound installation and performance, public art, and sculpture. His work has been reviewed in the Los Angeles Times, and the OC Weekly.

The highlight of "Photo Environment" a group exhibition featuring the work of eighteen artists from the U.S. and Canada is an installation by Quebec-based Diane Landry. She fuses high and low tech to create evocative works that explore time and movement in innovative ways that take the premise of the show - twist up the idea of a photograph, the environment and image presentation - to an extreme. Using the spinning mechanisms of a functioning washing machine, she creates two portraits of women whose heads bob up and down with the motion of the appliance. Tripped by a sensor, it starts up when a viewer enters the space. The whirl of the machine draws views up close, where a disk houses 12 portraits that become an animation when reflected in a 12-sided mirror placed atop the washing machine.

The majority of works here consist of landscapes and other outdoor scenes that appear beautiful and/or bucolic, but have darker psychological messages that express their current perspectives shaped by matters such as the economy. James Hill's "The Long Cold Summer Project," a large, free form mixed media and collage work, depicts traditional images of summer: trees, car interiors, small bedrooms, statuary and watches. But while the images are familiar, the total effect is of chaos and depression. Rick Steadry's "Shadow Gate," from "Love Letters from Paris," is a large and haunting photograph of a couple's shadows (Steadry and his wife) set against an ornate Parisian gate. The image is made especially poignant by the fact that it was shot by the artist shortly before his wife passed away. Barbara Higgins' "Femmes a l'Opera Garnier, Paris," a collage photo of store mannequins in bras and panties against a traditional opera house exterior, contrasts our personal transparency today with the dressed up world that many of us grew up with. Other striking images include a portrayal of empty gun shells besmirching a desert landscape, "Shells in the Desert" by Blade Gillisen; and luminous, flowing water scenes, "The Waters," shot in several different countries by Chinese artist Zhou Ning.

'Photo Environment': Ecologically Sound
The uncluttered exhibition at Orange Coast College gives some stunning images their due

In my less-than-humble opinion, there is no such thing as too much art.

There is, however, such a thing as too much bad art, and any gallery overstuffed with work is bound to have its share. A good curator knows that less bad art on the gallery walls means more room for the good stuff. As example: Step into Orange Coast College’s Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion for the first time (as I did last week) and walk through the captivating “Photo Environment” exhibition; it’s so carefully laid out on the gallery’s white walls, one or two pieces even inhabiting floor space, and there is nary an iota of junk art to be seen. Once you realize the Pavilion’s curator is Andrea Harris-McGee, one of SoCal’s hippest, most-progressive programmers, it all makes sense.

In the larger gallery, she has put together 100 images by 18 photographers from three of the Big Cs: California (several artists are OCC faculty), Canada and China.

First up is recent Weekly-profile subject/sculptor Laurie Hassold with her photo Remembering the Way.The caterpillar/thing subject, assembled from tiny pieces of plastic dime-store junk, is photographed in a way that makes it look like a dragon—albeit one seeping seminal fluid. My friend Stephen swore he saw faces in Zhou Ning’s psychedelic photos of water. I didn’t, but there’s no denying the stare-at-the-clouds-and-see-figures aspect to the Rorschach images. H2O and O2 work together as hundreds and hundreds of pictures of the sky are cut and pieced together to form a waterfall of blue in George Blakely’s lovely The Sky Is Falling, with its images of clouds like foam.

I’m a bitch for decay and desolation, so Damian Tsutsumida’s photo of what looks like an abandoned theater—MCAS El Toro—with its walls missing, movie screen torn and hanging, seats removed and a tumbleweed poking up from the concrete, had me the second I saw it. Decay of a different sort is revealed in Barbara Higgins’ Femmes a l’Opera Garnier, Paris, the opera house reflected in the plate glass of a store window full of headless mannequins modeling skimpy bathing suits. Last week’s Art Whore subject George Katzenberger has four of his infrared cell-phone tower photographs on display, with his Santa Ana River, High Water an iridescent black-and-white dreamscape of concrete; asphalt; smooth, rushing water; and billowing cloud. Richard Gilles’ eight photos of billboards in (mostly) desert conditions—especially Clear Channel—bring to mind author John Berger’s Ways of Seeing and his thesis that it’s lifestyle, not products, we’re sold by the advertising agencies; the empty framing of the board is a symbolic skeleton of what’s left after we’ve consumed.

Seeing Suzy Lake’s triptych Peonies and the Lido #5 doesn’t automatically bring to mind Thomas Mann’s brilliant novel Death In Venice or Michael Jackson’s plastic-surgery-ravaged face, but I’m grateful her notes reference them. The image of the photographer putting lipstick on her pale white face, surrounded on both sides by voluptuous, dipping flowers, has social comment, autobiography, literature, eroticism and pop culture slammed together into one picture—and they all work together seamlessly.

One entire wall is devoted to James Hill’s mixed-media collage The Long Cold Summer Project. As much about creativity as anything else, if looked at from left to right, the amassed pictures, paintings and subtitles clipped from films are a world of inspiration leading to a series of 18 silver photographs. If looked at from right to left, those same images bring on a tumultuous flurry of associations . . . just like any good art.

Quebec-based artist Diane Landry has all to herself the second, smaller gallery to the immediate right of the entrance. Feminist in their sensibilities, her three installations are melancholic in tone and wildly original in execution. The Lost Shield is composed of still shots the artist took of herself shifting and tossing on a couch. The static nature of the stills is overcome by putting the images into a slideshow and overlapping them; the cumulative effect is the artist’s actions blurring slowly, the images bending in despair, as if her body is melting into the furniture. Her brilliant ode to housework, Madonnas, has two washing machines with pictures of two women and a revolving mirror attached to the spinners. Motion detectors cause the spinners to twirl and the women to bow their heads as if in prayer as you approach. To this man, the subservient image of women bowing to me as they prepare to wash my dirty underwear, as if their thankless gig were something sacred, was particularly disconcerting.

Based on Kierkegaard’s discussion of the knight of faith vs. the knight of infinite resignation is Landry’s video of herself standing in solitude in a kitchen, gazing out a window over the course of two hours while night and day drift past her. While Juggling suggests there may be something sublime to resigning yourself to your fate, the housewife imagery—the sink filling and emptying with dishes—is especially dispiriting. All that is missing is John Lennon’s “Woman Is the Nigger of the World” playing in the background to further hammer the message home.

Since 1959, when Rich Harbour went into his parents’ garage with a saw and a piece of foam, Harbour has crafted more than 23,000 surfboards and counting. Today, vintage Harbour Surfboards are collected by enthusiasts around the world eager to grab a piece of true surfing history. Harbour Surfboards was established more than 40 years ago and remains as the world’s oldest surfboard manufacturing shop at the same location and a driving force within the surfing industry.

The exhibition will feature photography, video, shaping room, more than 20 customs, classic and contemporary surfboards. A full color, 144 page, hard cover book will be released during the run of the exhibition and available at the Arts Pavilion Gallery Store.

The Exhibition and Events Location - the OCC Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion is located

LAPS 20th National Exhibition: Opening Reception: November 1, 2009 2pm-5pm. Music, wine, lots of art and lots of people are guaranteed at the LA Municipal Art Gallery in Barnsdall Park, 4800 Hollywood Blvd.

Phil Sanders of the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop in New York
will speak at 1PM. This event is 3 exhibitions in one and each is worth
a visit.

The main event is the largest show we've ever organized; over 193

artists and 9 presses, juried by LA art critic, Peter Frank. My work is
in the main show and the exhibition I organized, "Connections; LA
Printmaking 1962 to 1973" is frankly dazzling, with many rarely seen
and amazing prints. A "film series" of wonderful films and interviews
on printmakers in the 60's that will be playing for the run of the
exhibition October 29th to January 3rd. And lastly, the Robert
Blackburn Exhibition, our honoree is a celebrated artist/printmaker
rarely seen on the west coast.

Orange Coast College enhances student success by providing exemplary programs leading to associate degrees, transfer to other institutions of higher education, occupational certificates and continuous workforce improvement, as well as quality instruction in basic skills and English as a Second Language. Doyle Arts Pavilion focuses on contemporary visual culture and dynamic programming that inspires interaction and enrichment among artists, students, scholars, and local and international communities.

The mission of the Orange Coast College Foundation is to support the college by encouraging gifts of time, treasure and talent from alumni, campus & community members. A 30-member volunteer Board of Directors consisting of 25 community members, four members of the college administration, a faculty representative, and the president of the college’s associated students oversee the activities and programs of the Foundation. The Foundation has three full-time employees, an executive director and two administrative assistants.

Since its founding in 1985, the Orange Coast College Foundation has received over $50 million that has been split almost equally between cash donations and in-kind gifts of property, boats and equipment. As of June 30, 2009 the Foundation had cash assets of over $11 million.

Over the last 20 years, the Foundation has undertaken several successful fundraising campaigns and activities including efforts that resulted in the furnishing of the OCC library, construction of the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion, renovation of the Robert B. Moore Theatre, construction of the Harry & Grace Steele Children’s Center, celebration of Orange Coast College’s 60th Anniversary, the construction of a Nautical Library and renovation of the crew facilities at the OCC Sailing Center, and the renovation of the college’s Computing Center.

The Mission of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, CoSM, is to build an enduring sanctuary of visionary art to inspire every pilgrim's creative path and embody the values of love and perennial wisdom. The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, CoSM, is a 501(c)(3) organization, supported solely by charitable donations from the community. CoSM provides a public exhibition of the Sacred Mirrors and the most outstanding works of mystical art by Alex Grey.

For five years the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, CoSM, was open in New York City for contemplation and as a center for events encouraging the creative spirit. Hosting hundreds of spiritual and cultural events over the years, CoSM closed it's doors in New York City on January 1, 2009. The Sacred Mirrors, which were on display in the Chapel, are a series of paintings that allow us to see ourselves and each other as reflections of the divine.

The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, recently acquired a 40 acre interfaith retreat center as a permanent home.
Here creative people will join together to build an oasis for spiritual and cultural renewal.

Sixty-five miles north of New York City and just a 20-minute walk from the MetroNorth train stop at New Hamburg, in the town of Wappinger, CoSM will reopen a magnificent new Chapel exhibition environment for the artwork that has become a context for a growing community. Full Moon celebrations in 2009 will be hosted in a variety of locations and begin on the land after renovation has prepared a space for guests, anticipated for late spring 2009. The exhibition of Alex Grey's Sacred Mirrors collection will not be open until the spring of 2010, after massive renovations of the existing brick exhibition hall.

People of all ages, colors, and faiths from around the globe will pilgrimage to this place of beauty to enter into contemplative union with the artworks and nature

Selection from the curator’s statement:

Why print large? Other than the fact that hugeness has recently been greatly popular, overcoming its technical difficulties is part of the love of problem solving inherent in the personalities of many printmakers, who are mostly stubborn, curious, adaptable, inventive, and ambitious die-hards.

Shown in the exhibition and publication are a variety of printing techniques and approaches. Collaborative pieces, where the artist works alongside a master printer, include the works by June Wayne, Joe Goode, Roger Herman, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Allen Ruppersberg, Helen Frankenthaler, Mimmo Paladino, and Rufino Tamayo. These last three works are on loan from Mixografia, where master printers have the additional challenge of creating these prints from cast molds using paper pulp, resulting in three-dimensional sculptural prints. The large Tamayo print was created on a litho stone 61” x 97½”, which presented additional problems. Being extremely heavy, it had to be backed with steel and suspended vertically from a crane for the artist to draw on it. Other presses and printers who have worked with the artists in this exhibition include Gemini G.E.L., Cirrus, Ed Hamilton, and Garner and Richard Tullis. Artists who function as their own master printers include Pascal Giraudon, Endi Poskovic, Sarah Brayer, Patrick Merrill, Roger Herman (“Tank”), Michele Burgess, Safet Zec, Dirk Hagner, and Sheryl Seltzer. Perseverance is their hallmark. Unpredictability was inherent in my quest as a curator as well as in the nature of the printing processes themselves.

The Los Angeles Printmaking Society has collaborated with Orange Coast College in including their journal Newsprint as a part of this exhibition catalog. As the exhibition took shape, it began to make sense to meld the two publications as one. And so, included with the images are essays by and interviews with some of the participants. I hope that this combination imparts to the viewer an enriched understanding of the impetus behind many of these pieces. Many thanks to LAPS for their support in this unique presentation.

To the artists who have contributed their writings and their exceptional artwork and to the collectors and presses who have been so generous in loaning their works, I extend my deepest gratitude.

Refreshments will be served and Tom and Lisa will be touring guests through the installation in the library at Orange Coast College. Located at 2701 Fairview Road. Lot D9 is the closest lot to park. The library is located across from the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion and Starbucks Coffee Shop.

During a three month sabbatical in Rome in the fall of 2006, Tom and Lisa Dowling collected over 5000 images while working on four book projects: The Baroque Touch, Graffiti Culture Roma, Dowling Roman Adventure, and Portals, Passages and Thresholds.

The photographs are currently on display in the Orange Coast College Library.

Tom and Lisa work collaboratively in many genres, most notably sculpture and painting, so collaborating photographically was a natural choice. Both artists have many years of classical training in both photography and film, and Tom’s spare, minimal style is in marked contrast to Lisa’s layered compositions. This makes for a collaboration based on mutual respect for the other’s vision and style.

Tom has taught Art at OCC for over 25 years and his artwork is shown in both national and international venues. More information and images can be found at www.tomdowling.com.

Lisa has been adjunct in English at OCC for five years, and her poems can be found in literary journals such as Pearl, Spillway, Vulcan and Rip Rap. A number of her visual images have appeared in photography textbooks.

We expect many submissions and are trying to install as many student
artworks as possible. Large work is accepted but we can only fit so much work.
Films and video will be accepted and featured at various times
and on various dates during the run of the exhibit.

No entry fee is required and prize trophies will be awarded!

“John Paul Jones Retrospective” will open in the OCC Doyle Arts Pavilion from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8th, with a reception especially for the students, faculty and staff. A public reception is planned from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, April 10th.

Admission is free for both receptions and the exhibit, which will run through May 6th.

The retrospective marks the 10-year anniversary of the death of Southern California artist John Paul Jones (1924-1999). Cal State Fullerton Main Art Gallery and Doyle Arts Pavilion are working together to display more than 100 prints, paintings and sculptures that require two separate venues to exhibit the large body of artwork concurrently. Mike McGee, director of Cal State Fullerton Main Art Gallery, curated the retrospective exhibit.

John Paul Jones was widely exhibited and celebrated as an artist in the 1950s, 60s and 70s—both internationally and in Southern California. He was also acknowledged as the founder of the printmaking programs at UCLA and at UCI.

john paul jones profile artworkAlways known as an “artist’s artist,” Jones was one of the stars of the early Los Angeles contemporary art scene. He was given his first, major solo exhibition in 1963 at the Brooklyn Museum and a retrospective at the Municipal Art Gallery in Los Angeles in 1984. Despite such acclaim, Jones is astonishingly little remembered today. This retrospective exhibition and accompanying publication will give definition to his remarkable career as a printmaker, painter and sculptor and more clearly define Jones’s contribution to American Art.

The Doyle Arts Pavilion gallery will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evenings.

The CSUF gallery will hold its opening reception from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, April 4th. The gallery is located at 800 N. State College Blvd., Fullerton. Fullerton’s gallery is open from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. Saturday. Fullerton’s exhibit closes May 8th.

Marsha was passionate about the arts from a young age and studied art history in college. After college Darrel was involved running the businesses—Knott’s Berry Farm; later, in the 70s and 80s he owned restaurants. When Marsha and Darrel met in late 80’s, Marsha was involved in real estate sales and was an arts enthusiast who supported Laguna Art Museum. Darrel’s Renaissance Café in Laguna Beach regularly featured live music and offered local artists a place to display their work. Marsha and Darrel met at the Renaissance Café and soon after Marsha invited Darrel to a Laguna Art Museum fundraiser. Their mutual love of art was a part of their relationship from the beginning and continues to enrich their lives today. Diane Nelson Gallery than in Laguna Beach provided early inspiration for the Andersons penchant for collecting.

Darrel bought his first artwork in 1987, and he and Marsha began collecting together in 1990. Since 1990 the Andersons have put together a distinguished contemporary art collection featuring artists from around the globe. In the fast-passed, jet set, moneyed contemporary art scene today there is a phenomenon termed ‘cookie cutter’ collections: collections that look very similar to one another because they feature art world consensus favorites. This is not the case for the Andersons. Their collection is born form their personal passion and enthusiasm. They have put together a collection that inspires them, art that they relish having in their home.

If you talk to them about individual works in the collection, more often than not, they will tell you a story—each artwork has its own story. For them the acquisition of art is an adventure: it may start with a trip to Europe, the advise of a museum director, a find at an art fair, a chance conversation at an art opening, a visit to an artist’s studio, an article in a magazine, an introduction to a dealer, an insight from an exhibition, they have hundreds of stories. Sometimes it will happen in an a matter of moments, sometimes a conversation, introduction or a impulse will lead them on a journey that will takes months, in a few cases years. In the end they find an artwork with which they want to have a long relationship. As Darrel explains it, they buy art that they “fall in love with.”

Their collection began with a focus on the human figure. This could, undoubtedly, be explained, at least in part, by Marsha’s art history background. The very definition of art in every culture has been hinged upon the relationship between the art object and the human body, and images of the human figure are a constant throughout history. As you examine the Anderson’s collection, however, it becomes obvious that while they are focused on how contemporary artists translate the human figure, they are interested in more than just the historical linear progression of representation of the figure. Even in this exhibition that only represents a portion of their extensive collection, it is clear that the Anderson’s are interested in the details, nuances, juxtapositions, quirks, variances, and contexts with which artists imbue the figure. They are constantly seeking to see the figure anew.

This exhibition presents selections from the Anderson’s collection that focuses on the human figure. In recent years, the Anderson’s have changed the direction of their collection; they have been collecting contemporary photography. They are always looking for artists who bring them fresh innovative perspective. This is the thread that connects these two parts of their collection.

Darrel is the former board president, and current board member of the Orange County Museum of Art, and he and Marsha have been active patrons of the arts for many years. One of their passions has been supporting educational programs in Southern California. Their generosity has enriched the lives of hundreds of students.

It has been a great pleasure to organize this exhibition with the Andersons and a privilege for Orange Coast College to present this exhibition at the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion. I thank Marsha and Darrel for sharing their collection and for their encouragement and support.
